Root Canal Advancements

Technological Advancements in Root Canal Dentistry

The words “root canal,” may be the most dreaded two words in the English language. Fortunately, there are many advances in dentistry that make root canals painless, more comfortable, easier, and faster than ever before.

Tooth pain may be a symptom indicating there’s something wrong with the nerve inside a tooth.  The root canal procedure can clean out the damaged nerves and disinfect the tooth. Essentially the root canal will relieve pain and save the tooth.

Due to many great advancement in dentistry, root canals can now be performed easier, faster and with minimal discomfort. People who come in with pain, leave the office feeling much better after having a root canal.

Apex Locator

The Apex locator tells clinicians when we the entire length of the tooth has been cleaned, without having to take additional x-rays.

Rotary Instruments

Previously root canals were performed “by hand.”  This method took dentists a lot longer to complete the procedure properly. With the advent of rotary instruments, we can now clean the roots of teeth much faster and with more precision.  The machine spins files that clean the tooth mechanically and usually with better results than can be achieved without the motor.

Digital Dental X-rays

root canal #3

Digital x-rays make the procedure faster because the images come up instantly rather than having to wait for film to develop. Digital x-rays also reduce radiation exposure by as much as 75% to the patient.  We can snap a picture during the procedure in almost no time at all.  Check out our image gallery of amazing root canals we performed.

Magnification: Dental Loupes and Endoscope

Magnifying glasses called “loupes” help dentists see better and further down into the canals.  It’s amazing how much more becomes evident when vision is increased by 3x-4x.

In cases where the tooth is unusually difficult or where a root canal may have previously failed an endodontist, a root canal specialist, may use a microscope to see even further down the canals. To treat the tooth more predictably and with great results.
